Standing ovation, good humour and a few tears

The audience were on their feet applauding at the conclusion of our hugely successful Annual Concert at Christ Well, Manselton. Soprano, Angharad Rees, hit the highest notes and delivered a much appreciated encore. Baratone, Jordon Williams had the audience entranced with his delivery of `Tell My Father`. Compere, Kevin Johns injected good humour with his quick wit and anecdotes. But the stars of the evening were undoubtedly Swansea Male Choir. Amongst a wide variety of music, it was fitting that the Choir performed `Eli Jenkins Prayer` on the centenary of the birth of Dylan Thomas and also a `World War One Medley of Songs` to commemorate the start of the Great War one hundred years ago. The Lord Mayor of the City and County of Swansea was presented with a cheque for 1800, being the proceeds of two World War 1 Concerts held by the Choir to raise funds for the Help For Heroes charity, which supports service personnel injured in conflict. Following that presentation, the Choir delivered a stirring rendition of `World in Union` and tears were shed when the evening ended with a requested performance of the hymn `Morte Christe`, which had special meaning to many members of the audience, some of whom had travelled consideable distances for what was a memorable occasion.

Can concerts be brilliant?

`Brilliant`was a word I heard three times to describe the choir`s performances in Hereford on 2nd August. The word was used when we were leaving St James` Church after the wedding. Incidentally, we send the bride and groom our congratulations and very best wishes for a life of happiness together. When we had completed our concert at St Peters`, I was approached by a couple celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary. `That was just brilliant` said she. `The best evenings entertainment we`ve had in years`said he. The organiser of the Three Choirs` Festival in Herefordshire also used that word when she praised Swansea Male Choir and our guest soprano, Jane Williams at the conclusion of our concert. (She also wanted to know when we could return for a repeat performance.) So, it seems that our visit to Hereford could be summed up in one word - brilliant.

Concert Review - Paignton 22nd September 2012

Our weekend visit to Devon was a resounding success. The sun was shining on the English Riviera when we arrived at our hotel after lunch on Friday 21st September. It continued to shine throughout the following day right up until our concert in Paignton when Swansea Male Choir shared the stage with Brixham Orpheus, guest soloist Pauline Smith adding variety. An appreciatve audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy the programme presented, with particular compliments of Swansea's performance - Morte Christe, composed by Emrys Jones our choir's first musical director, was the highlight for many. Thank you Brixham Orpheus for your warm welcome and well done on your singing in Welsh of a traditional Welsh lullaby. A heroic effort by D.Huw Rees, our guest accompanist, who produced another terrific performance despite illness. Finally, a big thank you those who travelled to Devon with us. Every member of the choir appreciates your loyalty and support.

St. Jude's Concert Review

Swansea Male Choir were backed by some terrific performances from a young soprano and a quintet of harps. The sound of the harps, which was a delight, was matched by the clear voice of the soloist who sang two numbers acapella. Throughout the concert the Choir entertained with a variety of classical and modern music leaving the audience satisfied with an evening well-spent. Concert proceeds donated to the St Judes' Restoration Fund. Concert photographs are on our Gallery Page courtesy of Mike Radford of www.emdear.co.uk to whom we are very grateful.

Calon Lan Concert - 12 May

Swansea Male Choir, Jane Williams, soprano, and Loughor Town Band performed at a concert on 12th May to mark the re-opening of Caersalem Newydd Chapel, Treboeth. The concert opened with that famous Welsh hymn tune, Calon Lan which has close associations with the chapel. A firm favorite wherever Swansea Male Voice perform, Calon Lan was written in the nineteenth century by Welsh poet Daniel James to a tune by John Hughes, whose grave lies within the grounds of Caersalem Newydd. In recent weeks, of course, the hymn has had resurgence in popularity because of the success of the youth choir Only Boys Aloud in the television series Britain's Got Talent. So it was fitting that the grand-daughters of the man who wrote the music, were guests of honour at the concert and led the applause when the whole audience joined with the choir in a spontaneous and stirring rendition of Calon Lan.
